PREPARATORY QUESTIONS

READING COMPREHENSION

PREPARATORY PAPER-52

Direction (Qs.1 to 10): Read the given passage carefully and answer the questions that follow.

For the average person, art rarely figures in the larger scheme of things. (A) A (1) decorated wall is easily (2) blank with a fancy clock or a movie poster, which is (3) perhaps why the term, ‘(4) struggling artist’ came into being.

Hailing from a family of long-standing …(B)… sensibilities, Varun Backliwal, founder and CEO of Artisera, was well aware of this general lack of knowledge among even well-educated Indians. (C) When the skywalk between the Sheraton Grand Hotel and corporate offices on the opposite side opened up, he saw an opportunity to literally bridge the gap between those with an understanding of art and those without.

Today, that (D) overhead walkway houses Art Café, a gallery not only committed to creating art awareness, but also to reviving various lost traditions and art forms of India. “Many guests at the hotel work in offices across the road. The skywalk saves them the trouble of going through multiple security checks all over again. The art on display here warrants more than a cursory glance and it is our hope that when walk-ins leave this space, it is with a little more knowledge of art and artists than they had when they came in,” says Varun.

For its first showing, Art Cafe presents Melange, a collection of works by 14 Indian artists. From Karnataka’s very own Gurudas Shenoy to a possibly lesser known Roy K John of Kerala, the range here is as (E) eclectic as it is wondrous.

Artists like Anand Panchal and Kandi Narsimlu depict India’s rural life in their own styles with the use of bright colours, while Madhuri Kathe uses mixed medium to create abstracts mirroring her inner philosophy of life. The works of Naina Maithani and Praveen Kumar on display are also abstracts that tell a tale of cityscapes, both foreign and urban.

One can stand for hours, taking in the intricate ‘etch-in-a-sketch’ work by Ramesh Gorjala, who depicts scenes from mythology within the likeness of a deity.

Then, there are (F) exquisite works in pen and ink by Ashu Gupta and Laxman Aelay. While Ashu’s subject is Nature-based, Laxman presents rural Telangana in black and white against one block of colour.

Ganapati Hegde’s …(G)… work will leave you mesmerized with the skilful manner he has captured light on a forest floor.

(H)… are fostered in the works of Dinkar Jadhav and HR Das; Basuki Dasgupta’s pleces are murals on canvas and offer viewers a new facet of art. “It was our aim to present as wide a range as possible to showcase the various styles and media used by different artists, “says Varun. Mélange has done just that and will be on at Art Cafe till the third week of August.
